Shepherding Well exists to provide a place of rest where people can experience God’s renewal.
It is a safe haven for the weary and burdened - pastors, missionaries, leaders - those who have poured themselves out and long to be refilled. It is a beautiful place where we practice the sacred rhythms of silence, solitude, reflection, and prayer.
Over the next five years, our goal is to purchase a large tract of land and construct both a day-use cottage and a four-bedroom lodge where over 500 people can come each year and enjoy time alone with God.
What We Envision
Our desire is for spiritual shepherds to discover the refreshing presence of God and discover life-long spiritual practices that encourage their awareness of God’s kindness and the restoration of their joy in Christ. We desire that guests leave their retreat feeling renewed, their passion reignited, and having practiced new rhythms of soul care to shepherd others well.
40 serene acres of land in the foothills of NC
A pasture with 20 sheep grazing
A sunset over the ridges of the Blue Ridge mountains
A peaceful stream with benches for contemplation
A mile long trail through the woods for a quiet walk with God
A one-room creative prayer cottage to spend a day in prayer, and/or creating art, pottery, poetry, and music.
A four bedroom lodge, where each guest has a spacious and cozy room perfect for resting, taking a long bath, or napping on the screened back porch.
Watch the sunrise on a front porch rocking chair with a cup of coffee.
Take a stroll for a time of spiritual direction with one of the hosts.
Enjoy an evening meal around the outdoor fireplace with other guests who share, if they want, about their day alone with God.
Sit inside the Lodge at the giant oak table enjoying the warmth of the rock fireplace.
Come early, stay late; come for a day, stay for a week or longer.
“For over 20 years, my wife Angela and I have dreamed of providing a retreat center. But in 2020, I desperately needed one. After many years of insufficiently managing the religious burnout cycle, I imploded. I was done. But God... My Father in Heaven revealed my belovedness. He provided a spiritual director, soul care friends, and my first sabbatical in 25 years of vocational ministry. After almost fifty years of life and decades of teaching, preaching, and writing on biblical topics, I learned how to be alone with God and crave His intimacy during this season of renewal. I learned how praying can make my life more prayerful. I learned that our Father in Heaven was not angry or disappointed in me. I saw that my frenetic life was killing me and my soul was starving. I needed and still need a place to be alone with God. You need a place to be alone with God. Let’s join together to provide a place where over 500 pastors, missionaries, and ministry leaders per year can experience restful intimacy with our God.”

“Only be careful for yourself and watch over your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life.”
